A mysterious undersea river was discovered at the bottom of the Black Sea
The rivers at the bottom of the sea exist. The oceans keep many secrets, and the undersea rivers are one of them. Thus, scientists have discovered a huge undersea river flowing along the bottom of the Black Sea.
This river even forms waterfalls and is surprisingly skirted by trees and plants. It is estimated that this submarine river would be the sixth largest in the world according to water volume. It is about 350 times as large as the Thames and 10 times as large as the largest river in Europe, the Rhine.
This discovery can help scientists shed light on how life can survive in the deep oceans far from the rich and nutritious waters that are found on the Earth’s surface. The undersea river reaches 115 meters deep in some points. Scientists at the University of Leeds used a robotic submarine to study a deep channel that had been found at the bottom of the sea, and they found a river of extremely salt water. The surrounding floodplains and river banks are very similar to any river on Earth.
The water in these undersea canals is denser than the sea water that surrounds it because it has more salinity and brings numerous sediments. However this different water can provide nutrients and ingredients necessary for life in depth. This is not the first time when an underwater river has been discovered. Under the sea of Mexico, there is a river called Cenote Angelita. It was discovered by Anatoly Beloshchin and his group of divers.
